High Dynamic Range

Cameras can’t easily see things the way our eyes can. We can see details in shadowed areas at the same time that we can see details in brightly lit areas. A camera generally will meter for (see) one or the other, or an average compromise of both.

High Dynamic Range photography is a technique that can be achieved a number of ways, but ultimately the end result is an image that pops off the page (or screen) with details and colours throughout the image. To do this, 3 (or more) images are combined together on a Mac or PC using certain software (and some cameras can do it in-camera too) to combine the detail from the shadowed areas with the detail from the brightly lit areas. It’s a personal taste as to how much the effect is applied.

I prefer to keep most images within the realm of reality, but sometimes I will give it a bit of extra grain or saturation for some added punch...
